Positive Thought for the Week of June 1, 2020

Unity is the word for the week.

The year 2020 has not been very good to the world and to America. First we had the Coronavirus and the damage that it has caused to people and the economy. Now, we are wracked by violence because of the actions of one person. They sat that profiling (racial or otherwise) is wrong. That also goes for profiling the entire law enforcement community over actions of one or a few.

Our unity as a country is also threatened by the leaders that we have elected to represent the citizens of the United States. Their negative diatribe on both sides of the aisle have trickled down to the people, who now bicker among themselves. This is not how America was built. It was built by people working together toward a common goal of freedom and independence.  Henry Ford once said, “Don’t find fault. Find a remedy.” No one in Washington is working on remedies, only on fault. They fix the blame instead of fixing the problem.

Unity to be real must stand the severest strain without breaking. (Mahatma Gandhi) We have suffered many strains in the growth of our nation, many which were caused by our leaders with the best intentions. Most of the bad things that happen in the world were the result of someone’s “best intentions.”

Abigail VanBuren (Dear Abby) said, “People who fight fire with fire usually end up with ashes.” Very appropriate.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” – Abraham Lincoln  Yes, people have different ideas about how things should be done, which is only human nature. We do not need to lower ourselves to the level of some countries where brute strength determines the fate of everyone. We have a system of government which, while not perfect, has withstood almost 250 years of freedom and prosperity. We are civilized and need to act in such a manner.

“You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.” (Indira Gandhi)  Let’s stop the divisiveness and find long term solutions.
